Build Muscles

The human body consists of various systems performing a multitude of functions. Every action is determined and stimulated as per the nervous system. Similarly, the actions to move a limb or any other body part are conditioned by the muscular system. Muscle, known for its elasticity, contracts to help the various body movements. Not only this, muscles also determine the shape of the human body. It is. therefore, necessary to keep the muscles in shape, for an active and proper functioning of the body. This can be achieved by Building Muscles.

Building Muscles help to break down fat and maintain a healthy body. In the human body muscle tissues are re-built from the broken down muscle tissues. The muscle gains in mass when the breakdown activity or catabolism is overtaken by re-building activity or anabolism. Muscles build up with the increase in muscle mass or fibers.

With the growing awareness of the importance of exercises to ‘look good and feel good’, more and more people are going in for Building Muscles. Exercises varying from aerobic and cardiovascular to weight training help to Build Muscles. A regular practice improves blood circulation and supplies oxygen to nourish muscles. This will help to burn fat and Build Muscles.

The exercise is supplemented with a diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin D, E, B, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium and potassium. Of course, water is equally important to prevent electrolyte or mineral salt (loss in potassium, sodium) imbalance of the body, and dehydration.

Muscles are the powerhouses that burn calories. So a body with more muscles means the body burns more fat and increases bone density. An aging body especially tends to gain fat and weight, affecting muscles. Therefore, one needs to build muscles as a precaution to prevent ill health and prevent chances of osteoporosis. But in case of body builders, they take up weight training, a good calorie diet with proper rest to Build Muscles. They also take supplements to increase muscle mass by improving muscle growth. These may vary from ordinary health drinks to steroids and growth hormone injections.

Breast Pumps

A breast pump is a mechanical device that can be used to extract milk for later use from a lactating woman. The way a breast pump works is similar to a milking machine used in commercial dairy production.

Extracted breast milk can be stored so that someone else can feed the baby by bottle. Sometimes the breasts produce more milk than the infant can consume. A breast pump can be used in these instances when the breasts become engorged preventing proper latching by the infant. Breast pumping relieves pressure in the breasts. Also, this can be used when some babies cannot latch properly for direct breastfeeding even though the mother desires the benefits of breast milk. A breast pump stimulates lactation in women and can be used to continue lactation to recover from pregnancy even when the pumped milk is not used.

Breast pumps come in a variety of models, the most popular being the manual pump where the woman can directly control the pressure and frequency of pumps and the battery-operated pumps. However, electrically powered pumps are presently gaining in popularity. Some breast pumps are designed so that the portion of the pump is the baby bottle used for feeding. Another popular design available on the market is the Hands-Free pump.

It is suggested to start using a breast pump to provide stimulation immediately after the delivery. A hospital-grade double electric breast pump can be used until the supply is well established. The hospital’s NICU can provide the details regarding the renting of the hospital-grade breast pump. For the first couple of weeks it is advised to use a breast pump 8 to 10 times within a 24-hour period. Frequent stimulation establishes a good supply. So, initially, pump around the clock, although at night go for slightly longer periods between sessions. Initially, ten to twelve minutes per pumping session is enough. Even though much colostrum or milk is not expressed in the first few days, the supply will increase over the next several days with dedicated pumping.

The hospital’s NICU will provide the instructions on storing and transporting the milk to the baby bottles. Please follow the guidelines to avoid passing infections to the baby. Sterile collection bottles and sterilized pump kit is a safe option. Even in the hospital, deliver the expressed breast milk as often as possible.

It is important to use the breast pump at least 6 to 8 times per day that the mother is able to start direct breastfeeding. Decrease the length of pumping by a couple of minutes if the supply becomes extremely large. However, frequent stimulation is necessary. Even when the baby’s intake is low, as in the cases of premature babies, milk production needs to continue on as though the baby was born full-term.

Breast Pumps and Hygiene

Though breast pumps are used quite commonly, it is suggested to consult a doctor regarding a prescription for a breast pump rental or purchase. Though most insurance companies will reimburse either partially or fully for rental costs or for the purchase of a retail hospital grade breast pump, it depends upon the coverage provided by the insurance company for medical equipment.

There are a few important things to consider while using a rented hospital grade pump. First, other patients and employees have used the pump, since it belongs to a hospital. Hence, it is a multiple user medical device. The mothers must use a personal kit that has to be connected to the pump for the collection of the milk. These kits contain one or two breast flanges, container, tubing and connector. Using a personal kit offers protection as it prevents cross-contamination. Another way to prevent contamination is to prevent the breast milk and its moisture from flowing back through the tubing into the pump itself.

All the firms that manufacture, repackage, re-label, and/or import medical devices are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). All these medical devices are classified into Class I, II and III. Since breast pumps are considered Class II devices, they have to follow the quality control system that is the requirement of all Class II devices. They have to undergo a quality control check for any malfunctions, injury, or likely death that might occur by the product’s usage.

To avoid cross-contamination, all the pumps must carry a label on top indicating that a personal kit ought to be used by the mothers with that particular type of breast pump. As also, a descriptive literature providing all the requisite information regarding cross-contamination must be provided along with the medical device.

Breast Pump Reviews

The qualities that are required in a breast pump are comfort, efficiency, high milk production, and ease of use for the nursing mother. Presently, companies like Medela and Ameda, as well as a couple other companies provide top of the line breast pumps.

Mothers must consult a lactation consultant before renting or buying a breast pump. In the event the breast pump is being rented, it will be easier to purchase a rental kit. This includes the breast pump parts necessary for producing milk. A weekly or monthly rental fee will be charged by the rental agency.

The best in the rental pumps are the hospital grade pumps provided by Medela and Ameda. Medela hospital grade rental pumps include Medela Symphony, Classic, and Lactina rental breast pumps. Ameda provides Ameda Elite, Lact-e and SMB electric rental breast pumps.

Mothers must talk to the physician about writing a prescription for a breast pump rental or purchase. Even though a few insurance companies reimburse subscribers either partially or fully for all the rental costs or for the purchase of a retail hospital grade breast pump, it greatly depends upon the coverage the insurance company provides for medical equipment.

The Medela Pump in Style is a highly durable breast pump that can be used for a second or even third child, too. Even when the parts like the tubing, valves, or membranes have to be replaced, mothers using them consider them an excellent investment.

The Medela also has a Mini Electric breast pump that can be used for short-term separations of mother and baby. Traveling with this is very convenient since it is lightweight and completely portable. The pump can be attached to a regular feeding bottle. A transformer is provided along with pump that allows plugging it into any electric outlet or the pump can also be powered using two AA batteries. In the event that the two choices mentioned are not possible, a manual pump adapter is also provided for emergencies.

Consumer reviews show that the most preferred breast pumps are the Ameda Purely Yours breast pump, Medela Pump in Style Original and the Medela Pump In Style Traveler.

Breast Pump Rentals

Many new mother choose to rent breast pumps rather than buy them. Breast pumps can be rented at the hospital where the baby is born by the doctor’s prescription.

Hospital-grade breast pumps are made of a sturdy mechanical quality and are comparatively large and powerful. They provide enhanced suction and cycling for mothers and infants. The hospital-grade electric breast pump will be provided on rental basis only when direct nursing at the breast is not possible during the neonatal period. The concerned physician has to submit documentation for the same.

One of the reasons for renting the hospital grade electric pump is when the mother has been discharged from the hospital, but is still under treatment for postpartum complications which might preclude direct nursing at the breast.

Another reason is when the infant is still hospitalized even after the mother is discharged. Also, in the event that the infant has complications like a congenital neuromotor, oral dysfunction, or any other congenital or neonatal acquired condition then direct nursing at the breast might not be possible. In such circumstances the physician can provide the necessary documentation for the renting of the hospital-grade breast pump, provided an over-the-counter pump failed to meet the mother’s needs.

Sometimes, when the mother is receiving any therapy with pharmaceutical agents then that might render her breast milk unsuitable for infant feeding while in the therapy. Also, if the baby develops a medical condition or requires hospitalization, then nursing might not be allowed on a regular basis. These are a few situations where the mother need not buy a breast pump but rather rent it from the hospital. The physician then has to provide the requisite documentation along with the treatment authorization request. Detailed documentation of the medical condition as well as the diagnosis and prognosis has to be provided. The physician need to mention the expected length of time the pump might be needed.

Bovine Colostrum

Colostrum is the milk produced immediately after birth. In cows is it is referred to as bovine colostrum, which is beneficial to children and adults alike.

Bovine colostrum contains components such as immunoglobulins, antibodies, proline-rich polepeptyde, lactoferrin and glycoproteins, which are instrumental in fighting viruses in the human body. Also, the growth factors present in Bovine Colostrum are identical to those of human colostrum. There are over 90 components in bovine colostrum, which are divided into two classes, immune factors and growth factors. These two factors contribute largely in maintaining health for the human beings making bovine colostrum the preferred tonic for a growing number of people all over the world.

Bovine colostrum can rejuvenate your brain, assist generation or improvement of aged muscles, burn fat, assist the internal regulation of blood glucose levels, and repair the body’s DNA and RNA. Also, the vitamins and minerals present in bovine colostrum act as coenzymes, which maintain the chemical process in the body.

Over the years, research has proved that immune and growth factors found in bovine colostrum are nearly identical to that of human colostrum. So, bovine colostrum, more than any other forms of colostrum will be beneficial to human health. Also, there is a misconception that only children can benefit from colostrum. As a matter of fact, as bodies age, they stop producing immune and growth factors that help us fight diseases so there is a real need for colostrum in adults.

Colostrum is a natural food revealing no side effects. No wonder it’s been a favorite of athletes and body builders. Bovine colostrum is best taken in powder form as it gives better results when mixed with saliva. Another important advantage is that it can help the body to utilize the proteins and vitamins obtained form other food to a greater extent.

Bovine colostrum can be the right food for people of every age. But it’s important to consult your physician before taking colostrum.

Body Mass Index

A person’s body mass index is a number calculated based on their height and weight. It is used for a comparative analysis of people with similar heights. The body mass index is a brainchild of a Belgian statistician and mathematician named Adolphe Quatelet who created the BMI sometime from1830 to 1850. To calculate the BMI, divide the person’s weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared.

The Body Mass Index has been in use as a medical benchmark for obesity and is the statistical estimate for Adiposity. It is also the standard employed by the WHO (World Health Organization) for its obesity statistics.

This number was introduced to the public through the government’s efforts to promote sanguinity, nutritional knowledge, and healthy eating habits. This simple statistic has rendered itself very important since it can adapt itself to continuous changes inherent in a community and can indicate the economic development on a nutritional basis.

The BMI was promoted as a simple rule of thumb that any individual of a particular height can calculate at home. It might not be the best possible indicator with regard to weight and health, as it can be unreliable in children, athletes, and the elderly.

It’s quite simple to get an idea for the approximate type of body weight using the BMI. Roughly, an individual with BMI of 19 or less can be classified as underweight and is liable to suffer from malnutrition and other such eating disorders. A BMI of 25 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 would classify as extremely obese.

The US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reported that about 59 % of American men and 49% of American women are overweight and over 2% of men and 4% of women were reported to be extremely obese.

These alarming reports only prove the BMI to be a more critical in America today rather than just an easy index for a self- check. It is to be noted that the BMI is not a fully reliable statistic by itself and hence health and nutrition recommendations to an individual cannot be made using just the BMI.

Bikram Yoga

Yoga is at least about 5,000 years old. The Hindus of the Indus valley civilization developed yoga as a practical device to unite the individual self with the Brahman, the universal self. It was codified about 2,000 years back into a system by Patanjali in his work ‘Yoga Sutra.’

His yoga, known as Ashtanga Yoga (or eight-limbed yoga) came to be the authority on yogic practice. These eight limbs are to be practiced in sequence to achieve its spiritual end. In the modern age yoga came to be understood as ‘Hatha Yoga,’ which practices the third and fourth limbs of Ashtanga Yoga – Asanas and Pranayama.

Hatha Yoga, meaning sun-moon yoga, aims to unite the active and passing energies of the human beings. It harmonizes the body-mind relationship, and achieves a balance. The body becomes supple and strong. The mind relaxes and the stress eases. The internal systems, such as blood circulation, nervous system, digestive system and the endocrine system, are improved.

There are many systems of ‘Hatha Yoga,’ such as Ashtanga Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Vini Yoga, Integral Yoga, Sivananda Yoga and Bikram Yoga. Basically they hold postures that exercise the system. It is formulated by different teachers, giving importance to different aspects of Hatha Yoga.

Bikram Choudhry, the founder of Bikram Yoga, was born in Kolkatta in 1946. He became a disciple of Bishnu Gosh, the brother of Paramahamsa Yogananda, at the age of four. His mastery of the Hatha Yoga technique was so good that he continuously won the Indian Yoga championship, and retired undefeated at a very young age. Bikram started many training centers for yoga, on the direction of his master Bishnu Gosh. Later, he founded his own system of yoga known as Bikram Yoga.

Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures, done inside a heated room. The temperature is maintained at about 90 – 100o. This warms the body naturally, and the postures are easily accomplished. The series starts with standing postures, backward bends, forward bends and twists. Each posture is repeated twice. The full routine takes about 90 minutes.

Bikram has a school in Los Angeles where teachers impart yoga practice. He also travels throughout America organizing workshops and seminars.
